Dr. Seuss Topic Guide

Children’s author Dr Seuss was born on the 2nd of March 1904. His bright, rhyming books are still popular today. They were written in simple language to help children learn to read.

His books have been made into films and television series. They have been translated into at least 20 languages.

Teaching Ideas

  • Visit this page to find teaching ideas for Dr Seuss books, including Horton Hears a Who!, How the Grinch Stole Christmas, The Lorax, The Cat in the Hat, The Cat in the Hat Comes Back, Green Eggs and Ham and Which Pet Should I Get?.
  • Create lists of rhyming words that Dr Seuss might have used.
  • Write a story in the style of Dr Seuss for a younger reader.
  • Draw your own picture in the style of Dr Seuss, like this Cat in the Hat picture.
  • Try creating a musical rhythm to accompany some of Seuss’ sentences. Start with clapping the rhythm, then add percussion instruments.
  • Ask children to design their own hat, can they make repeating patterns using stripes? Provide strips of paper for younger children to try out their designs.
  • Make your own green eggs and ham (use spinach or food colouring to make the eggs green!).

Dr Seuss Facts

  • Dr Seuss’s real name was Theodor Seuss Geisel.
  • Dr Seuss was not a doctor! He added ‘Dr’ to his pen name because his father wanted him to study medicine.
  • Until The Cat in the Hat became a huge success in 1957, Geisel earned his money drawing cartoons for advertisements.
  • Green Eggs and Ham contains exactly 50 unique words. It was written after Seuss’ publisher bet him $50 he couldn’t write a book using only fifty or fewer different words.
  • The word “nerd” first appeared in a Dr Seuss book. You can find it in If I Ran the Zoo, published in 1950.
