World Social Media Day

June 30

World Social Media Day

World Social Media Day was launched by the company Mashable in 2010. The day celebrates social media and the impact it has had on communication.

The first social media sites emerged around 1997. By the early 2000s, more sites allowed people to share their ideas, images and videos. Some of them, such as MySpace (2003), are hardly used today while others, like YouTube (2005), are still very popular.

Today, people use social media to communicate with people anywhere in the world.

This video shows how social media has developed over time.

  • This resource is useful for talking to older primary children about the impact of social media on their wellbeing.
  • Design a new social media site. How would it be different from the existing ones? How would people stay safe on it?
  • Compose a social media post about the topic you are studying. How could you get your message across?
  • Use these resources to help children think about staying safe online.
