World Environment Day

June 5

World Environment Day

World Environment Day is celebrated annually on the 5th of June. Its aim is to get people and organisations thinking about environmental issues.

The first World Environment Day was held in 1974, two years after the United Nations decided to mark the event. Every year it is hosted by a different country, with a different theme. The 2022 World Environment Day celebrates 50 years since the start of the UN Environment Programme.

The climate and environment of the Earth have changed many times in its history. The most recent Ice Age only ended about 12,000 years ago.

What is different about the way the climate is changing today is that it is happening at a much greater speed than in the past, which is because it is driven by human activity rather than natural
forces. This process is commonly referred to as global warming.

  • Use our Environment Inspiration Posters as discussion starters.
  • Ask children to identify a way in which they could consider the environment, at home or at school. For example, could they find a way to recycle more materials, or use less water?
  • Make a glossary of environmental terms with definitions (and diagrams, if possible), e.g. net-zero, climate change, renewables.
  • Write the lyrics to a song about an environmental issue. Can you compose a melody to accompany it?
  • Use our Environment Pack to investigate which common materials can be recycled.
