July 1 - July 14

The All-England Tennis Championships is better known by the name of the London area that hosts it: Wimbledon. Wimbledon is one of the four biggest international Tennis events, known as the “Grand Slam” events. It is the only Grand Slam held on grass, rather than artificial, courts.

The first championship was held in 1877, at what was then the All England Croquet and Lawn Tennis Club.

For many years it was an amateur competition, but it became a professional event in 1968. meaning that the competitors could win cash prizes. Becoming a Wimbledon Champion is considered by many to be the highest achievement in professional tennis.
