International Yoga Day

June 21

International Yoga Day

Since 2015, the United Nations (UN) has celebrated International Yoga Day on the 21st of June. This recognises the contribution that yoga makes to health and wellbeing.

Yoga originated in Northern India as a Hindu spiritual practice thousands of years ago and is also practised by Buddhists. The word “yoga” comes from a Sanskrit word meaning to join or unite. Today Yoga is also a popular way of keeping fit.

In yoga, poses (called asana) are used which stretch and exercise different parts of the body. There is also a focus on the breath, or prana, which helps to clear the mind and relax the body.
