International Dance Day
An event every year that begins at 12:00 am on day 29 of April, repeating indefinitely
International Dance Day is celebrated annually on the 29th of April. The date was chosen because it was the birthday of Jean-Georges Noverre, who is considered to be the creator of modern ballet. The event began in 1982, and every year there is a Gala Event, held in a major city. Past hosts include Shanghai and Havana . In 2021, this event was held online, due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
There are also many other events held around the world. Every year, a well-known dancer or choreographer is chosen to give a message on the day. In 2018, to mark the 70th anniversary of the event, 5 message authors were chosen.
Students from the Northern School of Contemporary Dance perform in this video for International Dance Day.
