Father’s Day (UK)

Fathers' Day (UK)

Father’s Day is a day for people to appreciate fathers and other important men in their lives. In the UK, Father’s Day falls on the third Sunday in June. Gifts are given to mark the day, and families spend time together.

Father’s Day as we know it today began in the early 20th century, but celebrations to honour fathers stretch back thousands of years. Ancient cultures held festivals for father gods, such as the Norse god Odin and the Ancient Greek god Zeus. Christians recognise Saint Joseph as the earthly father of Jesus, and his feast day, the 19th of March, is Father’s Day in some countries.

In this video, children explain what they love about their dads.

Teaching Ideas and Resources

  • Ask the children to write a note to a man who is important to them.
  • Read My Dad by Anthony Browne and try some of our linked activities.
  • Research and write a report about the role of the male seahorse in reproduction. This page is a good place to start.
  • Ask children to use pencils or paint to create a portrait of an important man in their life.
  • Design a product that a male family member or friend would find useful.
