April Fools Day

April Fool’s Day has been celebrated for so long, that no one is sure where the tradition of playing practical jokes on the 1st of April came from!

Some historians think that it might originate from the 16th century, when France switched from the Julian Calendar to the Gregorian, moving the beginning of the year to January 1st. In the Julian Calendar, the new year began in April. People who continued to celebrate new year in April, were called April Fools, and made fun of.

Other ideas link the tradition to ancient spring festivals, or the unpredictable weather around the vernal (spring) equinox.

Traditionally, April Fools jokes need to be played in the morning. Today, newspapers, websites and TV programs often carry an outrageous fake story on the 1st of April!

This video is all about one of the most famous TV April fools of all time!
